The Shifting Tide: William Monk Mystery Series, Book Random House Publishing Group. Chicago / Turabian - Humanities Citation (style guide).   Mystery-wise, "The Shifting Tide" while intorguing was a little touch and go -- not too many cunning plot twists or sinister red herring culprits for Monk to track down. Even the usually tense courtroom scenes where Sir Oliver Rathbone is centerstage is absent; this time a healthy chunk of the novel is devoted to what Hester and her helpers go /5(96).

One part of an author’s job, especially when writing fantasy, is good world building. In James Maxwelll’s new novel Golden Age ( pages), part of his Shifting Tides series of books, this comes very easy as he has just taken the ancient Mediterranean with its Greek and Egyptian cultures firked with the map and changed some names to protect the innocent.   It won the award ten years after the previous fantasy book in , when Salman Rushdie received the prize for Midnight’s Children – the magical yet realistic tale of a young telepath in the new nations of South Asia, following their liberation from the British Empire. Similar patterns can be observed amid other general literature prizes.
